Macintosh statistical software

Structural Equation Modeling

To my knowledge, these are the only structural equation software packages being offered for the Macintosh:

Regression and things like correlation (covariance) calculation are a subset of what a typical SEM package does, so these can be used for some of the same jobs for which you would buy a regression package.

MX (free)

Mac OS X, Linux, many other versions
Current version: 1.55 (parity)

Last revised: April 19, 2004 (listing updated 6/2008)

Mx is a very cross-platform package that even has an on-line and Unix server version; it is written by Michael Neal. While there is a graphic user interface for Windows, the writer recommends doing a server installation to allow for a graphic interface. (Thanks, Stephen J. Read).

R with SEM add-on (free)

R is a general purpose open source statistics package (see the separate page on R for the Mac); there is an SEM (Structural Equation Models) add-on by John Fox.

There is also a PLS package (Adam Naples wrote, “it’s kind of a less constrained, or exploratory SEM”) for R.

EQS

Configurations Available: PowerPC for Mac OS 8 (discontinued); UNIX (runs on Macs in Terminal mode, command line only)
Current Version: 6.1 (as of 1-24-06)
Listing updated: 6/2008

EQS was developed by Peter Bentler but is now distributed by MVSoft. On OS X (you have to buy the UNIX version), it runs under the command line. In Europe, EQS is distributed by ProGamma.

“feedbackloop” sent us MVSoft’s note on compatibility (edited for space):

...To use EQS 6 for Mac UNIX, you must enter the Terminal. After downloading EQS 6 for Mac UNIX, you must run a setup program to create an UNIX script called "eqs". This "eqs" script requires you to enter the EQS input model file name, output file name, etc. then submit the job to your Mac UNIX system. When the job is complete, you must use a text editor or a word processor program to open and review the EQS output file.
